I don’t remember ever seeing quite as many people as this
squashed into the back of a pick-up truck before. There’s a lot of trust being
put in the driver – any small mistake could easily send a passenger or two
sprawling into the road and end in disaster.
This slightly carefree attitude to safety is one result of
the Thai Buddhists’ belief in destiny and what happens to you being the result
of past actions. If it’s going to happen then it’s going to happen, and what
influences this is more to do with past behavior than present safety measures.
Still, I really hope 13 wasn’t an unlucky number for them.
